Gloucester Academy

Careers information

At Gloucester Academy we want to ensure that students leave education with the skills and knowledge enabling them to best participate in post-compulsory education and, later, in employment.

The academy has a designated Careers Leader, Mrs Hartsoe, who works closely with the GROWS Network of local further and higher education providers, Gloucestershire’s Local Enterprise Provider gFirst LEP and our link Career Enterprise Adviser.

Students participate in a range of activities designed to give them an understanding of further and higher education, and labour market. There are assemblies hosted by local colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers, drop down days devoted to careers education, encounters with employers, presentations explaining progression paths for students post-16, independent career advice and opportunities for mentoring.

All year 10 students are expected to complete a week of work experience (this year, 22-26 June 2020) giving them an invaluable insight to gain new skills and information about labour market. All students in year 11 attend appointments with our independent career adviser, Frances Meredith, who supports them in their post-16 choices.

We are currently developing a new, progressive Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) programme for students in years 7 to 11 in accordance with the eight Gatsby benchmarks recommended by the government.

From September, all Gloucester Academy students have access to START, a comprehensive, digital platform offering progressive careers guidance for students. Once a fortnight, students also participate in Barclays Life Skills lessons designed to develop their employability skills. The new curriculum will have career education embedded in lessons and extra-curricular activities providing inspiration, aspiration and experience for our students and preparing them for the constantly changing, complex world of work.

Work experience

We are excited to announce our work experience dates for our current year 10 students 22-26 June 2020. Work experience enables students to gain skills in a real-world work environment. As well as providing an opportunity for experience to be put on their CV, work experience placements help students to develop their professionalism, interpersonal skills, and their problem-solving abilities.

Detailed information and parent packs were available at the year 10 parents' evening on 7 November 2019. Please contact Ania Hartsoe, Careers Leader, to request the forms or with any questions related to this year's work experience programme.
