Every year on 8th September, people around the world mark International Literacy Day.
Organised by UNESCO, this special day is an opportunity for governments, schools, organisations, and societies to highlight improvements in world literacy rates and reflect on the world’s remaining literacy challenges.
International Literacy Day is an essential event in placing emphasis on the importance of literacy and to celebrate the progress made in education over time. However, it is also a chance to exhibit the challenges many people face and reaffirm how fortunate we are to receive a great education.
The theme of this year’s event is literacy and multilingualism. Embracing linguistic diversity is integral to addressing literacy challenges and developing societies with the ability to communicate between themselves and with others. This is especially important in today’s globalised and digitalised world, which will be central to discussions taking place today.
Literacy is an essential part of learning and education. When children struggle to develop their literacy skills, it often has an inhibiting effect on their other important academic and social skills. That is why we place such an emphasis on proficiency in literacy at our school. By advancing their reading and writing abilities, our students are equipped to succeed in education and their life after school.
At Gloucester Academy, we will celebrate International Literacy Day with a whole school assembly that highlights the empowerment that literacy brings to the lives of young people. There will be lots of creative and engaging literacy activities in tutor time for students to enjoy, and plenty of reward points on offer.

Celebrations on International Literacy Day have taken place around the world since 1967, and we are excited to be taking part in this year’s event as we continue to promote proficiency in literacy as essential to success in education.
